I ordered a 2022 Ford F250 King Ranch on 5/19/21 to take advantage of my 2017 F250’s elevated trade-in value. Trade-in value was calculated to be more than I paid for it four years ago. In light of the microchip shortage, I figured the new truck would not be delivered until sometime around Thanksgiving or Christmas.
On 8/3/21, Ford sent me a $2,000 discount coupon if I order or purchase an F250 by 9/30/21. I could have locked in this $2K discount on the truck I had ordered in May, but something told me to wait.
Much to my surprise, the truck I ordered was built and shipped on 8/16/21 with an ETA of 9/4/21 to my dealer in Newport News, VA. This was great news because I could then cash in on the discount Ford offered. Then it all went downhill from there. Just a day or two before 9/4/21, the online ETA was changed to 10/5/21. I wondered what happened and began speculating if it was damaged in transit.
Upon investigating the delay, I learned it had indeed been damaged. The trucking company broke the passenger side exterior mirror … a $1,500 part! For reasons unknown, the trucking company arranged to have the mirror replaced at a dealer an hour away from here. My first thought was, “Why there, and what if it gets damaged again before delivery?”
That dealer completed the repair on 9/7/21 and the online ETA was updated to 9/19/21. OK, we’re making some progress, but then I was very reluctant to lock in that discount until I could inspect the truck. Then more delays began to roll in. The online ETA changed to 9/23/21, then to the 26th, then the 29th and then to the 30th. I was feeling some real bad juju over all this.
Then the deal-breaker came when the ETA changed to 10/3/21. I would not be able to inspect the truck before locking in the $2K discount. The truck had been located within an hour’s drive from here for over 5 weeks, but was not making that last leg of its journey.
On 9/28/21, I cancelled the order for that truck and ordered a different one, and locked in the discount towards this next one. I realize the delays can occur again, but at least I know the next one hasn’t been damaged … at least not yet. But once again, I’m back to delivery happening sometime around the Christmas holidays.
Well, guess what FINALLY arrived at my dealer early on 9/29/21? Sure enough, it’s here and it's now in my driveway ... and I was able to apply the Ford $2K coupon. Photo shows the white 2017 I traded in for the red 2022.

The replacement mirror looked and functioned as new. The broken was stowed in the truck when my dealer received it. That thing was mangled pretty bad, and I was relieved to not find any damage to the door skin considering the impact the mirror suffered.
