2001 excursion part 2: extra cylinders, extra features
Almost no rust, relatively speaking. Definitely not beyond salvation
Entire left bank read 90psi
Front 3 on the right bank read 140 psi
Back one on right bank read 30 psi
Didnt bother getting a reading on the second from the back.
All 9 cylinders that I checked read a solid 170 with a bit of oil dripped in on top to seal the rings, so at least i know whats going on with the engine - just sucks 😆
- any reason I can't put an EGR equipped engine into a non-EGR truck? I assume I'd have to remove the EGR provisions from the engine, but there's not some hidden nonsense I don't know about?
- Is there any market value in a 200k mile v10 that needs a ring job? the valves held good compression, so maybe the heads are worth something?
- otherwise, I'm stripping it down and scrapping it.
If the engine is running and a huge cloud of oil smoke isn't following the truck around everywhere , then the worst case scenario would be a slight overbore and new pistons (best case would be a giggle ball hone and new rings).

I can get a Used v10 for $1-2K, and doing a piston re-ring will cost about $500 in parts alone, assuming I don't need to over-bore the engine, and then we're looking at another $200 in oversize pistons, and gets into the territory of "might as well do a full rebuild on the heads too, which pretty soon balloons into $2000 of parts and labor, which is nice to have a completely rebuilt engine, but I would rather just stuff a good used engine in.
If I'm going to be pulling an engine out and putting one in, I'd rather just put in a good used engine than tear down the current one and re-ring it, or take the risk of tearing it down only to find that it needs machine work, etc.
And there is a pretty good cloud of smoke following it around, so there's a good likelihood of needing a full rebuild with overbored cylinders.
