I have heard that the CPS on the 7.3s are..... well, some seem to fail and some seem to last forever. No one I have talked to seems to know why or if there is any preventive measures to help them last. I have heard that many guys keep a spare on board, and that the Navastar ones are the same and cost less than the FOMOCO OEM.
Any ideas on CPS life and where to get the best deal on a spare?
Just don't try to buy a CPS from a Ford dealership. Get one or anything you need for your engine, from an International Dealership. You'll save loads of money.
I posted the same question on a different web site and a guy who works at international responded saying that they had gotten a bad batch from thier supplyer. He went on to say that International replaced all CPS's they had in stock but he was not sure if Ford did the same thing. So he recommended that I locate a IH dealer in my area and get the CPS from them. I did and it cost about $81 with tax, better than the $170 the dealer was going to charge me.
CPS sounds like good insurance. I called a local IH tractor dealership today and they had never heard of what I was talking about. Can anyone point me in the right direction for an online IH dealeship where I can buy one or give me a IH part # for one so I can tell the guys what to look for here. Thanks..........

That's because it's not really called a "CPS". Ford calls it a CMP Sensor and International calls it a CAMP Sensor. Here are a couple of links for part #'s, location (with diagram), and how to change it.
Thanks for the info. I found a dealer from the International Truck and Engine Co. They said I need to pull the CPS and give them them the # off of it to be sure of a match up.

What year is your truck? If you have a 1999 or newer you definately take the part for higher serial numbers. My 97 takes the newer part. Ask for a "CAMP Sensor" and give them the part number rather than having them look it up for you.
