Everyone here can't possibly be running stock, SD, or denso starters..... Does anyone have experience or knows someone who's tried one of these bad boys?
I used the mean green one until an internal wire came loose and it wouldn't start 120 miles from home. I put my old stock one I had for a spare with me. It cranked hard as it was junk but it fired. I was pretty pissed about that as it cost a lot and was almost new. I still have it somewhere, but just run a super duty one now. I do still run a mean green alternator.
As far as I know you'd have to swap to the SD starter first. I think I read somewhere that the nose cones between OBS and SD starters were different but haven't had both side by side. Would be interesting to see the 3 side by side and if it would work or not.
Got me dude. Worth a call if you go that route, it was very difficult to procure a real one. If it craps out, my local starter/alternator shop can freshen it up for a modest cost.
My 3G had a rectifier issue on weekend so I ordered a new one from AZ on their site.
@Hit Man X , the genuine Denso can be purchased from Corey at CNC Fabrication Diesel for $335 plus shipping. Someone on the SD side found one recently for a few dollars less, but I cannot seem to find the post at this time. I will keep looking a bit and if I find it I will update my post here. You are right, it is very difficult to find a genuine Denso and not a knockoff.
I bought one from him in back in 2017 and it has been performing great. If the 6.7L conversion was known at that time, I may have gone that route, but it was not.
Results of the Denso starter are in the video below.

If the Denso does die one day, it can be rebuilt by the owner for a few dollars. SkySkiJason over on the SD sub-forum has been working on these trucks for 20 years and has told us the kit linked below is what will need if it ever breaks and we want to rebuild it ourselves.
For anyone that has a desire to upgrade to a Denso style starter or another starter that has a more thick mounting surface than the OEM starter, you may need longer mounting bolts, I did. For example, the OEM bolt is on the left, 35mm in middle and 40mm on right.
You can see the difference in the mounting surface in the image below.
I ended up going with a 45mm bolt that gave me more than enough bite in the transmission case, but I have a ZF6 transmission as well. It may be different for the ZF5 or the E4OD, but the thick mounting surface will greatly reduce the thread count of the OEM bolt going into the transmission case. With a high torque starter like these, I would think we would want as much bite as possible.
Some use blue loctite, I simply utilized some lock washers just like the OEM bolts utilized. I check the starter mounting bolts during every oil change and they have never been loose after installing it in 2017.
I hope this helps someone with their decision on a high torque starter as some of the information provided above applies universally, not just for the Denso.
After talking with @Edgethis about starters I noticed the power Master 9051 looks IDENTICAL to the XDP starter, and even has the wrinkle finish but with different sticker and is about 50 dollars less.
Hoping Brett will post up how he likes his 9051 once it comes in....
My starter failed late last week, today I installed an XDP starter on my 97 OBS 7.3. It seems to crank a lot faster.
I also replaced my negative battery cables today. They still looked to be in good condition. I had already replaced positive cable a while back. Batteries are a year old.
I installed a Powermaster this last week. It has been nothing short of phenomenal. I also made all new 1/0 Guage power and ground wires for both batteries. It starts so much quicker. Crazy how much faster it spins.
Here are some pics from my install
