had the dead gauge no pedal issue last week, replaced gear shift and OD button unit with a Dorman as factory was rubbed through. Drive fine to work, towed camper to elk camp with no issues. Three days later, same issue. Figured bad Chinese part, had buddy bring me another Dorman, popped in, worked fine one day. Stuck two hours from home now, and can’t get it to come back. I spliced the oem one back together this morning eliminating the bad spot, worked for five minutes then died
not sure where to look next, double checked the 42 pin harness, no rubbing through as I put heater hose around it when I first got truck. 280k on truck now, everything has been reall solid til last week
any ideas would be greatly appreciated, camper and truck are sitting at 8000 feet in the snow, just hiked out for cell service
Tom, first of all make arrangements for you to get back out of elk camp without the truck if need be since you are in signal range.
Second, since the problem appears to go away fir a short period when you install a new part, is there a chance the harness further upstream from the part is damaged?
I have a ZF6, so I am not familiar with how the shift handle is installed. Is it possible there is a connector or pin inside the connector that is faulty or making intermittent contact?
Thanks for the quick reply. I have an OEM shifter lined up as well as antifreeze to winterize camper first thing in the morning if I have to leave everything for a few days
great idea on down stream, that OD button has to be getting to the tranny somewhere. Will go see if I can find where it leaves can, and where it hits tranny, maybe rubbed in between.
going to hike back in another 15, least I have a good amount of tools and wire supplies with me.
The fuse never blew, I did pull it and put a fresh one in after every new part. Went through everything and can’t find a rubbed wire any where, but that’s on mountain in snow
oem shifter got me off mountain and about ten miles up road before it died. Have wife’s uncle coming to tow camper and a wrecker for truck. Once I have it in my shop will keep this thread updated with what I find finally. Going to be a long trouble shooting I think, but will find it eventually, if nothing else I am stubborn, and just can’t see me buying an 80k truck, this one stays forever lol
So started going through things this morning step by step. Everything n the wiring circuit tested fine with DVM, so I backed up to power. Why I didn't just eliminate this to start with is beyond me, maybe being on the mountain and looking elsewhere. I have a fuse splitter for a relay on my LED headlights I put in a few years ago, every time i took it out and put a new fuse in it, I should have just put fuse in the slot where it was. I did this a few hours ago, and so far I cant make it fail. Will post back if anything changes, but thats where I am for now.
