Can't figure it out

OK, I've got an office chair with a gas piston to adjust the height. Every month or two it acts up and frequently sinks as if the piston has a leak. Then aftr a few days, it's rock solid. I've been ready to buy a new piston more than once, but then it would start working. Maybe it's the release mechanism, not sure how to check that.

And oh yeah -- it usually happens at times when I'm really busy.

Thoughts anyone?

Thanks,

hj

Depending how well-built or quality or the age of you your chair is the lift-mechanism might be failing or at least becoming intermittent as you describe. Can you clean the portion of the piston the holding clamp grabs onto?

I have an "older" chair with the same sort of lift that seems to slightly sink over a few months but it raises back to full height when I release the holder allowing it to rise to its full height then sitting back down again. In that way its firm and comfortable.

I'll bet I've had this over 10 years or more---was very affordable brand new on a close out sale in a local Office Max/Staples outlet.

As mentioned, sounds more like a mechanical issue. I don't think the piston would be likely to act intermittent, once they start leaking off they usually just get worse. Not sure what the catch looks like or how it works but maybe cleaning and a quick check to see if it's tight might surfice. If nothing else I'm sure you have a hammer close, adjust it!

I have had many chairs that developed this issue..

I believe what happens is the piston fits in the round hole in the seat and the button on top of the piston is able to be far away from the mechanism.

Over time the seat moves further down the piston and the button becomes close to the mechanism and is activated by sitting on the chair..

The chairs I have been buying have a taller piston so I never have to use the piston extended..

In the collapsed state it is just right
