My fuel quit this summer but as the temperatures got cooler it worked the other day is there a sensor that controls the pump or is it a bad pump hate to drop the tank if I don't have to!
It sounds like your fuel pump quit when it was hot, right? It might work now that things are cooler but the safe bet would be that it will quit again for you.
My '93 with 5.8 was doing the same thing last year when the weather was hot. It happened a couple of times in warmer weather but would start back up after cooling down but finally I had to have it towed. Thankfully, it was local. It was acting like a vapor locked truck with a carb.

I didn't want to drop the tank (midship,35gall.) so I cut a hole in the floor for access. Luckily there were a couple of online tips on doing this and from the pics I could tell just where to cut. I didn't bookmark those though, so you'll need to do a search. I did save a couple of pics:
