Pulled the gear box and throw out bearing and commenced a second cleaning inside the bell housing due to all the mouse fur/nests from 8!years in a corn crib in Iowa. After noting the bell housing was also part of the rear motor mounts I passed on pulling it
Second collection You can see the top of the bell housing oval opening that the critters got in
Critters can do a lot of damage in a hurry! Back when my kids were all still home, the wife's car never set for very long. Even though, the red squirrels found time to crawl up on the engine and munch on a couple of vacuum lines and caused a few headaches until I discovered what the trouble was. Good luck with your transmission.
Mac VanPelt who is helping me with parts and instructions said I should pull the bell housing and check the pressure plate as the possibility of more mouse fur is there but I don’t have the skill set or garage to perform that task Today I took the gear box apart In preparation for the rebuild and noted both the reverse idler and cluster gear with damaged teeth
While I wait for the new reverse idler and cluster gear I have been "practicing" the reassembly of the gearbox and to say the least it isn't easy. Many thanks to Idaho211 who provided me with the three pages of his manual for the tear down and rebuild as I couldn't figure out how to get the output shaft into the input shaft w/o disturbing the pilot roller bearings there but through trial and error I have found that if the input shaft isn't completely flush against the gearbox there is enough room to get the output shaft within the input shaft plus I'm using some EP to hold everything in place which seems to work well. Once I get my final parts it's my plan to have it put all back together by end of next week for road test. Lastly, can someone tell me which LD transmission this is? I see Borg Warner mentioned but am unsure. The gearbox has a plate 94F: and on the other side another plate AF-7006-D and finally in yellow paint that's still readable says 9T4A. Thanks in advance
Installed a new low reverse gear, reverse idler gear and cluster gear. Reinstall tomorrow, connect speedometer cable and add gear oil and test drive. Thanks for all the good intel from all you enthusiasts. Much appreciated
Installed gear box, flywheel cover, speedometer cable and gear added gear oil and drove her out of the garage. Shifting seems tighter now as opposed to before overhaul. That should be good for a bit. Thanks again for the good intel couldn’t have completed it without the tips and tricks.
