i got a 6.8l in a f450 just setup the timing marks like the book calls for but when i turn the crank over and go back to check them they are no longer matched up even turning over the engine a couple times and looking at the timing marks they wont match back up what gives ??
Forgive me if I don't remember this right, but is it different colored links in the chain that you use to time it? If so, I think the chain's length makes that happen - as in, rotate the engine once, the chain doesn't do one complete revolution, if that makes sense.
This is so that the links of the chain don't always land on the same teeth on the sprockets, so the wear is distributed.
yes that what i thinking cause i have done set them up twice and turned over the crank several times and cant get the chain links marks to line back up at the same spot. at lease the engine turns over with out hitting the valves thanks for the info. i thought i was going crazy
I wish someone else would chime in on this, but this all sounds familiar like someone else did the same thing. If you keep turning it, go to TDC on #1 on compression stroke, look at where the colored link is. Turned the crank two full turns and observe where the colored link is. Did it move? If so, yeah, the chain is an odd length, compared to the number of sprocket teeth.
I could be talking out my butt here, too.. I haven't done a modular yet. Yet. I was THIS CLOSE to doing my V10 because it started to sound a bit clacky on startup, but never got there before I sold it. 10W40 made that go away, and I told the guy who bought it that, too
Anyway, do the two-turn thing above and report back. Can you take pics?
i tryed to start the truck and could not get it started it popped a couple of times thats all i removed the timing cover and tryed to time it up again only thing i found was the balancer cam it was one round off i woulndt think that would keep it from starting but been fooling with it today and marked the timing chain links they do not line up even after i turned the crank counter clock ways 4 rounds and still not going back to the timing marks so that lets me know that even after the first few rounds the marks do not come around like i thought the would handle is up 90 degrees handle single link at crank 1/2 half counterclock wise 3 rounds this is at #1 tdc compression should be correct
At the risk of sounding completely stupid if these motors don't they operate on the 4 stroke cycle OR does the OHC configuration throw all that out the door?
