Zero balanced harmonic damper/balancer externally balanced
Hey all, While shopping for a new harmonic damper or balancer for ol'blue which sports a 1979 externally balanced harmonic damper/balancer.
My question is (after finding may 3 externally harmonic balancers or dampers in a 2 hour search) is a "zero" or "neutral" damper what I should be looking for since the balance portion of the damper is the hatchet weight between the damper and the block?
I Would like to find one with laser etched timing marks if available.
Hi headloct, I am you know more then I do about the subject. I noticed that some manufacturers list there harmonic dampers as being used on both internally and externally balanced harmonic damper/balancer? I really got me confused. If some manufacturers write that in their products description and others do not??? I don't know I may be over thinking the whole thing but I don't want to get the wrong damper.
On the '79 and up 460 engines they went to an externally balanced setup by adding weight to the flywheel and to the spacer that goes behind the damper. The damper never changes and is the same as the one used on the internally balanced engines.

Hi Dave, I must ask why did ford have different parts numbers for internally and externally balanced harmonic dampers? It Would make sense but wouldn't early and late 79 models use the same damper and parts number. Early Would have the round spacer and late would have the hatchet.
Dave thanks for your post and interest in my project.
The original engine in my '79 Ford had the weighted spacer but the damper appeared to be identical to other 460 dampers. I don't know why the part numbers would change really. Most of the dampers have a D0OE number of some kind cast into the ring but it is possible that later they went to an E1 or something because Ford does that sort of thing sometimes. Thinking of the C8VE, C9 and D0 cylinder heads that are identical.
The length of the spacer doesn't change nor does the length of the damper where it goes onto the crank after 1969. The early ones except for the Boss have the belts running in grooves machined into the outer ring of the damper.
