Yeah, I think you can help your engine if you get the right pair of heads. The 351C with the smaller chambers also has ports too big for the manifolds your 351M has. But there are small chamber, small port heads from austrailia that will do what you want. You might also mill .060 from the heads you have now and from the intake face of the heads as well. Don't mill the intake. you will also need shorter pushrods. More compression usually helps the 351M a bunch. DF
A 351 M can be easily stroked to a 400M by changing the crank to a 400M crank. 351C pistons and 400M pistons have the same compression hieght. However the pistons must be sleeve with a bushing as theare larger in the 400m than the 351. I know this works as I am building a "rat" engine for my '67 F100. You can use any 351C piston available. I used KB-177 (KiethBlack Hypereutechtik) but you can use normal composition or forged for a NOS setup, Drop me a line a Xmerwynd@Yahoo.com if you have any questions, I researched this deeply and can provide additional info if you need it.
The FORD 351/400 modified is a 100% Ford design and manufactured small block engine. It was marketed 1972-1978. The 351M/400M both use the smae raised deck Cleveland block. I am still buying parts for the motor build u and machine work as I get the extra cash. The heads have been ported and polished with 3 angle vale gring, comp roller rockers, comp extreme energy cam(duration 275/285). Block bored .040 as a daily diver, no chance of overheating due to poor heat transfer. KB-177 pistons, PAW balanced con rods, all ARp hardware, Mildon oil pump and 9 qt pan, Cloyes TRue roller timing gears & chain, Fluid damper, MSD-6AL ignition and distributor. I am held up for cash to have engine blueprinted balance. I plan to buy a TSi streetfighter transmission. What will it run in the 1/4, I do have have clue. To the flex My comment on the heartbeat of America was sarcasm, had you taken the time to readit. I am no Ford expert . However, I wanted to build a different motor than the 351W and FE family of big block Ford.
I stand hat in hand chastised. I am a senior boomer, to me a "rat" motor was the term used to describe any highly modified engine with out regard to manufacturer. I stand corrected and apologize for not knowing the proper definition for the 21st century. The last time I was involved with building a street rod was 1966.
Xmerwynd,
All is cool bro. The term you are looking for is rad or radical. I agree that a built tall deck from the Cleveland family is different. Lots of people shy away due to the cost, but the results can be impressive.
