Well guys I’m in the process of getting my 99 superduty f550 rollback ready to go to work. And first on list was to drop the trans for a clutch. Truck has a resealed 2000 motor in it with intake 4in exhaust and rebuilt turbo along. With a dp tuner honestly will probably get a hydra as soon as funds allow. Tuner came with the truck the replacement engine came out of. The truck weights around 12,600 lbs and I’m finding all kinds of conflicting information on clutches.
Ive drove different trucks with big single disk clutches along with dual disk clutches the engagement was nice and similar to stock in my opinion. Anyway mainly looking for recommendations and advice and first hand experience. Thanks for replies in advance.
For a working truck I recommend the ZF/Sachs replacement. Clutch engagement is smooth, no rattling. No junk like the Valeo (oem). I used to like the Luk brand as the clutch springs were a little more progressive so the pedal was lighter at red lights, however their throw out bearings don't last (screech).
The OEM was "ok" for a daily driver but the fork and bearings left a lot to be desired for towing heavy. I run a South Bend now, engagement is solid. There's no slipping the clutch with it tho, it's either engaged or not. Pedal is a touch more stiff. Had to delete the return spring after it stuck to the floor twice and pulled the rod out of the new MC. Holds great towing heavy. No more asking myself if I just felt the clutch slip or is that burnt clutch I smell on steep uphill grades.
@SkySkiJason would know a lot about the different clutches available to us
Depends on current setup but South Bend is top of the line! I put in the SBB-1944-60KHD and am pleased pulling 20k. DO NOT ORDER from Summit, pick up in person or order direct or from a trusted dealer ( I had to replace a crap clutch from Summit with a good clutch from Diesel Xtreme 1721 Old Hardin Rd, Billings and got what I needed onsite.) Aside from "Why in the he** did you order online from an outfit that sends you out dated overstock crap rather than current up to date stuff from us" (I deserved the chastisement) - great service!
BTW - the order from Summit arrived old stock damaged in shipment, and not discovered till I tried to fit. Out $764.97! KMA Summit!
I believe it currently has a Luk replacement clutch in it I will half to double check this weekend to be sure. But it doesn’t look bad at all but on stock loaded it will slip. And on tow tune it slips with mild throttle usage.
LUK was not up to more than stock power for me. I put up with it for over 100k miles towing at 23-24k lbs gross.
I loved the Southbend Con OFE. Smooth engagement, easy pedal and never slipped once. Truck dyno’ed 370hp with 175/0’s and T4/S366.
Currently running a SB dual disc street clutch because I’m probably a little over 500hp now. It has a heavier pedal and is not as smooth as the Con OFE - but it’s not aggravating to drive.
I always tell everyone to call Southbend and let them advise you which clutch to get. Every customer I’ve installed a clutch for is happy with what SB recommended for them.
I had my unknown clutch replaced with a South Ben 1939-OHD. I had the flywheel resurfaced (properly) and the clutch has been great towing heavy 90% of the time. Stop and go traffic, starting up steep hills, etc... I tow our 5th wheel cross country with our truck.
As for Summit Racing, it is unfortunate that CH had the experience he had and I remember when that happened. I ordered my clutch from Summit and it showed up in great shape. Although, I live 2 hours from the Summit distribution center, so there is that.
I have been running the 1939-OHD for 6+ years now and it is still very confidence inspiring.
Well after calling and talking to a rep at south bend ended up with a street dual disk clutch.
On another note who do you guys recommend for a replacement zf6.

That is the clutch I’m running. I use All Star Standard Transmission in Tampa, FL for manual transmission rebuilds. They’ve rebuilt several ZF6’s for me and a few other transmissions and t-cases over the last 25yrs.
