yes ran it for a bit and drove still had the problem. after the change then checked the fluid again and I need to add a quart. As remain the same level since.
If you are saying the problem started AFTER or shortly thereafter then I think subford was indicating the filter probably fell out of place and back into the pan. I'm not sure he was going there but hopefully he will check back and verify what I said. It is not an uncommon problem. He is one of our most knowledgeable members.

It shift a lil bit better when you get on the gas hard and bring it up too like 3500 but just sucks gas
You didn't mention whether you had a 2WD or 4WD. The filters are different for each one. Make sure now that you put the correct one in. Difference is the tube length.
Your truck may have gone into LIMP mode which is designed to protect the truck from someone getting on the gas hard and 3500 RPM's. I am posting a video of how you run diagnostic codes for your truck. You will get two or three digit codes . Use a paperclip in place of the jumper wire he uses. This is invaluable when working on the trucks which you will have to do with these older vehicles. Get the truck to operating temp at IDLE and then run the Key on Engine Off test first and post your codes. They must be cleared before you do the KOER engine running test.
As Sandymane said above if you have a 4x4 and you put a 2 wheel filter in the transmission it cause what you are describing.
Also you will not get a MIL (check engine light) with a bad VSS train to PSOM and PCM.
The error will only appear in the stored part of the codes sometimes called the CM.
I changed my speedometer and it fixed my problem it shifts like a CLOCK turned it off got gas and turned it back on and it still shift perfectly ! Sadly I gotta sell it! Beast of a truck hopefully this helps someone! Thanks for the help everyone!
