Holley Sniper EFI 1986 4.9

I’ve got a 1986 F150 with manual trans that I’ve owned for about 6 years now and live in CA. I have been considering for the past year or so, installing a Sniper EFI on my truck. I’d need to make it look completely stock, so keeping the smog pump, egr valve etc on my truck is a must at least for visual inspection. And the distributor, I’d replace the stock unit with aftermarket that has a TFI style ignition module. My main concern would be if the EFI unit would pass the sniffer. Im pretty sure it would.

Has anyone on the forum who lives in CA done this to their truck? Thanks

I would think it would pass the sniff test but before you can get that far dont you need to pass the look over test?
That is the part I would worry about.
I would check with others in your state on what they have done.
I also want to say someone posted that kit did not want the smog stuff on and working?
See if you can find install papers for the kit you want or call them to see.
I cant remember if it is someone on here or the other Ford truck forum that has installed a few of the kits where he works as he would know.

edit: I missed this was for a 300 six may want to check out this link and maybe start a post in that area asking the same question.

If the holley sniper is not CARB certified, I am sure it will not be legal for California. Since it's tuneable and you can change the parameters and make it run dirty, I bet it's not CARB certified.

Chevy used to sell a aftermarket LS engine that came with it's own computer. It was CARB certified and could be swapped in any vehicle and be legal in CA. Not sure they make it anymore. And of course a chevy engine in a Ford would not be cool. Never heard of Ford doing the same thing.

Yeah this particular unit is not CARB certified. Just means that it wasn’t beneficial enough for Holley to pay CA to get the approval and certification..

thanks for the recommendation to the other sub forum. I’ll definitely check that out! I mainly posted in this forum due to the CA smog requirement.

You have to look at what this unit fits, how many of them are still on the road its a wonder they did anything at all.
If you look at their v2 unit that would bolt on in place of the v2 Motorcraft unit the same would go for it.
Now the v4 unit being it would bolt to any v4 intake they would sell a bunch of them.
