The project on Friday.....
Got a late start on the project Friday. The batteries even when connected to the truck have not been right for the past several months. In parallel configuration they should always read the same and they were .4 volts different.
Yep bad connections and cables.
Started at 1200 pulling the old heat soaked, brittle, corroded cables from the truck. While under the truck I also noticed the starter was oozing some grease from the end so that got pulled as well. 00 welding cable was used for all battery attachments positive and negative as well as seriously upgrading the battery to frame and body connections. I still need to make the engine to frame connection upgrade from the brittle 10 AWG wire and that will probably just be 0 cable. Also you will note the 60 amp breaker on the fender next to the relay needs to be hooked up. The 3/8 inch bolt was a bit too short to add the cable from the battery so ho Ham Radio until I visit Ace Hardware Monday morning.
With about 2 1/2 hours running to the parts store for the starter then Sonic for a Bacon Cheese Burger and a Route 44 Cherry Lime Aid then feeding the my buddies dogs for him it was a long day closing the hood at 2200.
Monday my new U clips and screws as well as new plastic push pins should be ready for pickup so I can put all the trim back in place after the upper supports for the radiator gets re-attached properly. Three of the screws broke when taking them out so had to scrounge to make it work for a few days.
That being said the truck now starts like a pig got hit with a cattle prod while on crack.
Also if you are going to make your own cables make sure you have the proper tool. I used this as an excuse to get a good hydraulic crimper and now I have one for the other projects on the list..
