Hey there, my 2000 F250 7.3 with 200k miles started making a pretty loud whining noise. I pulled the serpentine belt and the spun all the pulleys, etc. Everything feels smooth except for the power steering pulley. It has some resistance to spinning (might be normal), but it also has some play in it, not side to side, but in and out. The PS fluid is full (but dirty) and I have not noticed any issues with steering binding or steering noise. Is it normal for the PS pump shaft to have some in/out play? Not a lot, maybe 1/16" or so?
EDIT: My neighbor has a 2000 F350 7.3. We loosened the serpentine belt on his and checked his PS pump and it had identical play, so I'm guessing that's not my problem. I'm going to try a new serpentine belt since it's quick and easy and see if that helps.
Thanks Eswift. I just found this great writeup on the PS fluid flush and plan to flush the PS fluid once I change the belt. I'll also upgrade to Mobile 1 ATF when I do the flush.
