I just noticed lately when driving my truck that when I am turning a corner the steering will tighten up then become really easy to turn causing some over steer. I check the fluid and it is fine and all the linkage is fine. The pump may be the original but doubtful it is but it looks it. You think the pump might just be wore out. Also I replaced the hoses and steering box about 2 years ago with new ones.
It's possible the pump is gong bad but it generally begins to make a whining sound. I would consider it the second most likely cause. The symptoms you mentioned sound to me like a worn or loose belt. Perhaps a spot of grease got on it or it has slick spots. It may need to be tightened or replaced.
If not the belt, you will want to check your steering linkage for dry, broken or loose joints; Then I would look at the steering gear box and the soft knuckle joint on the steering shaft to make sure it is not torn and binding - giving the illusion of a tight pump.
Start looking at the easiest and most obvious parts first.
Well it has made a slight whining noise for several years but that is usually pretty common with ford power steering as far as I know But I will double check everything to make sure, You would think if the belt was looseor slipping it would squeal a little and it doesnt.
