2006 f150 key

Hey fellas , I have a 2006 F150 4x4 with a 4.6l , and automatic transmission. I only have 1 ignition key. Now yesterday the little loop on the end for a ring broke off. Would I be able to just drill a hole in the main body of the key to put my ring back on? Thanks in advance.

If down to one key already, gonna soon be a time you're gonna need a dealer to start it. I have 4 but I bought spares and a local key man cut them, then the truck let me program them. There's a chip in them where you talk about drilling. You need two good keys to program a third so you already need a dealer if you need another key ever.

This has been outdated for at least 5 years. DIYer's can use Forscan to reset the system and reprogram new keys. Two keys with UNIQUE chips are needed, clones don't count as separate keys. Any decent locksmith can also do the job.

If you're feeling particularly cheap, do a "redneck PATS bypass". Get several $2 plain keys cut then put the original key that still works into the transceiver ring so it always gets read when you use the plain key.

You can also do a hardware store clone of your existing key so you have a good remote. It's really up to you based on what you want and what your budget might tolerate.

Doing that bypass sets you up for the guy driving a screw driver in the slot and turning it. Bye bye truck you'll be lucky if they find it in one piece or not burnt . The pats system has greatly reduced theft . creeps will steal anything .

Yep ... but the keys I described are unique, not clones. They come uncut, but they already have a unique chip in them. The PATS will program them if you have two already programed. Programming doesn't change the key AFAIK, it just teaches PATS to recognize it. I believe if you have three OEM keys that work, and you only use two to program more, that third (call it an emergency spare) spare that you have hidden under a floor mat will no longer be recognized even.

.
The "creeps" will never know that the bypass exists. Obscurity is your friend as the truck will look identical to every other of the same model when parked.

H8h? Who said anything about that?

You must realize not all amateurs will know a driven screwdriver will not work . But then this young joy rider has your truck . Then there are the ones that try to car jack a stick shift and can't handle it .

Hey projectSHO89, you have me interested in that “redneck PATS bypass” . It’s an old nearly worn out truck so I really don’t want to spend a wad of cash on it. I am a bit of a dummy when it comes to all this electronic gadgetry on these rigs today. Where is this transceiver ring located? Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's around the ignition cylinder. Remove the shrouds, dismount the ring. Mount the working PATS key in it and secure (I've used zip ties) to keep it in place. Verify that your plain keys work then stuff the ring with attached key way up under the dash and secure it.

Like anything "redneck", there are downsides. For example, if your PCM needs replacing, you'll need to regroup.

Oh, and I guess what the previous poster was hyperventilating about might be a concern.
