Head Gasket

I recently discovered an oil leak on my valve cover gasket. After power washing the engine to replace it, I noticed that it was not the valve cover gasket; it's the head gasket. The engine has a little under 100,000 miles. There is no water in the oil, it has never been over heated. Would it be very difficult to replace the head gasket myself? It's a 1984, 4.9L, 300 inline 6. The truck still runs strong but has a very rough idle.
Thanks, Ed

I would just drive it and check the oil often for milky color....whenever you replace a headgasket, its going to be messy, and you'll notice other parts that need replacement. You need to ask yourself if you can keep dirt and other debre out of the cylinders long enough to do the job correctly...replace all the bolts per torque manuf specs....etc etc.

The head gasket is not overly difficult if you have done engine work before. If you have not then I would also just keep an eye on your levels.

I changed the headgasket on my 84 F150 4x4 300 six in about 8 hours. I thought that was pretty good timing concidering one of the head bolts snapped off when I was tearing it down.
