Throttle plates Question

I am still a novice and I am almost finished rebuilding my 2100 carburetor on my ‘73 F250 I recently bought. I am worried because I notice the throttle plates do not close all the way. In fact, if you look at the picture, you will see them in their most closed position. My first thought was to adjust the idle adjustment screw, but the screw tip doesnt even contact its

plate. Is there some other way to close these valves or do I need to replace them? Any help is greatly appreciated.

you should have the screws in the throttle plates loose so they center in the bores, then you tighten them...

Thanks dl burch. I didnt mess with the throttle plate screws in the picture. Maybe the PO did. So if I loosen those screws, the throttle plates will relax and close up better? Then retighten.

Those tips seen should never touch those throttle plates, they are only for adjusting the idle air to fuel mix.

The idle speed adjust is just one screw on the linkage. If you look close, you'll see the throttle plates are beveled in opposite directions, they are not intended to shut completely. An engine's gotta have air to idle. Those plates have pressed in stops too I see, keeps them from going all the way in the slots of the shaft.

Those are mixture screws, the throttle plate idle scre is on the side of the carb.

The tips of the idle mixture screws you see are turned back 1 1/2 turns. The throttle plates do not come anywhere near touching the mixture screws.
I think my main worry is that these throttle plates will not close up any further and the transfer slots seem too exposed. I think the throttle plates need to be more closed. Am I wrong?

There is a set screw to to adjust it back. You can see the position it should be.

Too much transfer slot exposed. Something in the linkage is holding open. Maybe fast idle?

Make sure the choke is open all the way and the fast idle cam is all the way down.

correct, IF that is causing the problem. and as others have mentioned make sure idle speed and fast idle adjustments aren't holding the throttle shaft as well as any other mechanical interference either inside the throttle bores or outside the carb (including the accelerator pump shaft

It is weird, the fast idle screw is all the way out. Same with the throttle screw. So neither of those are helpful for closing the throttle plates. Maybe I can back up the dashpot to get those plates to close up.
I can tell the PO recently rebuilt it — pretty fresh gaskets. But somethings are really out of adjustment. Frustrating to say the least. But I really appreciate you folks offering advice.
