I am a second-year student in a heavy-duty diesel program. My college has General, John Deere, Case-IH, Cat, and Komatsu programs. I have learned a lot but the biggest gripe I have is with lack of knowledge of computers/programming. With how computer-heavy diesels are I figured they would be more knowledgeable with computers, programming, and understanding updates. I have asked almost every instructor for more education on the computer side and they all respond with: As a mechanic, you don't really need to understand the computer, programming, and the updates; just how to update and follow the diagnostic steps. If something is broken or faulty, replace it.
Instructors are highly knowledgeable on the mechanical side... computers not so much. I think most colleges with mechanic programs are the same. Any knowledge is likely self-taught.
If anyone has good educational resources please link them.

programming is writing computer instructions so that when the instructions run, repeatable things occur, often with stored data.
however, you don’t need programming experience to modify data.

Yeah, sorry I don't mean programming as in writing code. Just anything beyond following manufacturer software update which is as easy as downloading and installing something onto to my computer.
