OK guys
I'm about to be a new diesel virgin and can't wait, but all of these posts are scaring me.
could use some adice on the 03 4x4 F-250 Lariat crew 6.0 I'm about to buy.
ok...and now you all will really know I'm a novice...whats a flash?
I'm assuming is wiping and reprogramming the flas rom in the electronic control system?
Keep reading.. plenty of users are happy.. this board is for helping people with problems..
Flash simply means an update to the computer. The programs are stored on flash memory, thus the term "flash". It allows Ford to fine-tune the PSD (you might read different opinions on that as well).
Listen to that little voice in your head. No, I'm not an owner. Look at the proportion of negative posts to positive posts in this versus other forums.
HAve been to the Dodge and Ford Dealers trying to make decision. Currently am 92 Dodge Dakota LE with 171,000 mile and never been stranded. Dad has 99 Ram with Cummins, runs great and dependable.
Really like the F250 with 6.0 diesel but am hesitant to pursue Ford after 2 night of going through these bullitens. The F250 I want will be order. Is there any way I can be assured that the motor in it will be a 04 built motor. Was impressed with the F250 I test drove. Does get up and scoot.

do not buy 2003 buy 04 or 05 way to many problems with 03 and many problems with mpg on the 04 I only get 12.8 on hwy which stinks for diesel runnig 65 empty around town 8 to 10. I would buy a 2005.
If you are ordering it will be an '04 motor. I've read everything on here and several other boards and it is not going to stop me from ordering. You must remember there are a lot of F-250 owners out there driving their trucks and not posting on bulletin boards. I recently took a trip to Colorado and watched for all the HeavyDuty type trucks. I went through Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. In every state I saw more F-250/350 on the road than Chevys or Dodges.
I've got an 04 F-350 runs great. Hwy driving last week I got 18.34 MPG using the winter blend fuel. If you like the truck buy it. Sure the early ones had problems, the bottom line is never buy the first one off the line unless you are a collector or you will be the ones working out the bugs. If I had it to do over I'd buy another one today. Mine is great.
Ford trucks are a very good truck exspecailly when with the PSD, it is mechanical and things do brake people do have problems but its like that with any truck, i would say its the best out of the 3 truck makers in the us, dodge use's the cummins diesel which is a good engine but has pretty flat hp and torque also get about 8 miles to a gallon towing, Chevey forget about it, the have the worst diesel engine you can buy its pretty mcuh a gas engine minus the spark plugs, and they added the glow plugs, they dont have much power and the engines burn out quickly and need to be rebuilt, the blue smoke and loss of power plus fumes coming into the cabin happendsall to often to the duramax, they have improved but still bad, the only good thing they have is the allison tranny one of the best tranny you can get when you talking trucks......Anyways go for the PSD you wont get diapointed, like someone said above this is a place were people look to for help on there problems and gives you the wrong idea about fords or the PSD just becauase not too many people post about the goods on a truck or how much they like it rather the bads and how much they hate it which is such a small number.
Was a Diesel Virgin until 30Sept03 when I bought one off the lot (well, leased it). I LOVE IT!!! Probably a problem plagued unit bit I can't tell. My mileage is fair (avg ~15ish) and no real troubles to warrant a second guess about (rusted shocks and poor blades -- pety really).
Have had a few questions about it, and all have been answered here on FTE, and AS a result, I Love my Truck even more.
Buy it. You too will Love It. These Babies can SCOOT~~~ (not to mention PULL like there's wind pushing you).
(just be mindful of costly oil changes and necessary warm up times -- my only two real gripes).
Ah Yes... my First Diesel, and not my last -- iz tho I tasted that sweet brown sugar --- NO GOING BACK TO GAS baby.
just to be clear love fords, the only problem is ford didnt test the 6.0 enough and thats why there are so many problems, now true there are alot of people out there with very little problems. but there are also alot of first time diesel owners who do not have a clue that a diesel should get better fuel mpgs. they feel the power and the truck runs so there happy. just so you dont think the problems with 2003 are small ford bought back over 500 by ther own numbers. they could not fix those and I FOUND THOSE NUMBERS IN BULE OVAL NEWS. those were in eary 2003 april I think, the number have grown since. once ford gets it figured out it should be a good engine.
love my 6ltr wouldnt trade it in for anything else but if you are looking at posts to make up your mind remember people who typically take the effort to type are complaining, the greatest proponderance in any walk of life of noise makers are complainers. lots of people love their trucks, there are bad ones in every batch do you homework and buy one, you will love it.
hey dana that is not always true about complaining, if you had a truck that had problems that ford could not resolve you might look at many different ways to get your problems resolved. one way is to see what kind of problems others are having. I am glad there are some people who are happy with there trucks. I just wish I was as happy with this truck as my other 2 super duty both good trucks no problems, great fuel mpgs and no other problems. but I have a friend who is sales manager at ford dealership and he says it is still a problem and the repeat customers who have owned 7.3 are the ones that he gets the most feedback from and they are telling him, no where near the fuel mpgs out of 6.0 they got out of 7.3. They are the largest dealer in my city and he say there diesel sales are off by 40%.and they feel if ford doesnt do something quick there going to loose alot of customers loyal. while I was at the shop last week looked at there back lot where they keep most of there super dutys 70 trucks in stock never seen more then 20 before, ther just not selling the word is out to many problems
