I am dealing with a 1984 4.9L manual. Before 2 days ago, no problems starting. Some issues with lock cylinder and ignition switch problems. 2 days ago while driving, the engine died. After pulling over I tried to start it. I would crank but not start. I checked all the connections under the hood and made sure it was getting gas. All I could do by the side of the road. When I pulled the key from the lock cylinder, it broke. After towing the truck home I replaced the lock cylinder and ignition switch. Engine still cranks but will not start. No spank at plugs or coil wire. Coil has good voltage input and resistance both primary and secondary. Testing on the ICM reveled a weak ground. The ground wire from the ICM goes into the ignition switch then comes back out the firewall and grounded. Bypassed that and grounded the wire from ICU directly to frame. Still engine cranks but no start. Any help would be appreciated.
I think in 84 the 300 would be a feed back system so it would be in the distributor.
But either way I would say that is the first place I would look / replace.

Have you checked the wires at the coil connector. Last Fall after chasing intermittent starting issues, I found the wire crimp on one of the coil wires in the connector was corroded.
If you find the issue is in the distributor, I suggest you just replace the dizzy with a rebuilt one, they are cheap and have all new parts in them. I learned that the expensive way after one item at a time...in there. Then one of the old parts took out two of the new parts I installed...finally a rebuilt one solved the issues.
