Hi,
I've pulled off my front bumper and the pads that surround the tow hooks are dull and showing signs of age (my truck: 2002 Ford F 250 with 218K). I've cleaned them up but wanted to know (this is a small surface area to try), what is a good step by step process to clean, prep and paint so that this area can look better when the bumper goes back on. I've heard that Acetone can get Metal ready for paint. If this goes well I like to try and prep and paint some of the exposed rails underneath. What paint and primer would you use on a Truck body?
Acetone will remove grease and wax but it doesn't prep the surface beyond that for paint. Simple steps is to wire wheel, clean with degreaser like simple green, super clean, purple power, then acid wash with phosphoric acid (found in the paint area of box stores) keep wet for 10-20 minutes, let it set up for 2 hrs, rinse it off. Let dry then prime and paint. The acid will remove all the residual rust so it can't come back in the same spot as easily. You can skip prime if you use Chassis Saver, Por 15, or KBS. You must top coat all 3 though if its exposed to UV or it'll go grey
