I have my reasons. Mostly that I can sell my stock cat for 4 figures and buy a new one for under $500
And downgrade and otherwise good truck. If your cat is going bad and you have to replace it (e.g. living in California), I can understand this. Other than that...
Tough crowd tonight! Oh well. If you're going to present specific, substantive reasons why and examples of universal cats damaging other systems in a truck I'm listening. The snide remarks are cute, though.
The experience i have with universal cats is they throw check engine lights (wont pass inspection). Granted both times i used them they were on cars. But the issue was the sensor holes where not in stock location throwing the reading off.. If you have to worry about inspections then look for one with sensor holes as close as stock location as you can. Then dont get rid of original until you get inspected making sure you can pass. Theres a reason stock cats are so expensive, they work...
A good cat aint cheap. All of the el cheapos cats don't meet epa standards so no really reason to run one unless you have a visual inspection. . Kooks Green Cats are nice but $500 for the 3".
Also not sure on many non weld in aplications. We don't have rear o2 so no code throwing issues at least on mine not sure on CA emissions ones.
This is the setup I fabbed on the V10 to quiet it down to stock level since the muffler was rusted when I bought it, had most of it it my parts pile for other builds.
SPD Y to 3" V Band Clamp, Kooks 3" Green Cat, 3" Exhaust tubing to Dynomax Ultra Flow Muffler to Mangna Flow XL Muffler to new stock tail pipe.
Started with just the Magnaflow XL muffler but was too loud on long tows.
