When the SPOUT wire is plugged in at idle,My timing advances ten degrees and the engine runs very rough. When it is unplugged the engine runs great. It is a EEC-IV model. We replaced the ICM and it didn't make any difference. Any help would be great. We've been playing with this for over a week now????????
Your other post said when you reconnect the spout connector, the rpms would drop, this is a sign of the timing being retarded. If your showing 10 more degree of timing with the spout connected and its running poorly, then that IMO is odd. Are you getting any codes? Did you take the distributor completely out by chance and install it 180 out? Even if the check engine light is off, it is possible that its storing codes.
The EEC-IV calculates spark timing and sends a signal thru the wire that has the spout connector in it. When the spout connector is disconnected the engine runs at base timing. With the spout connector disconnected put the timing lite on the engine and have someone conect the spout connector while you watch the timing marks it should advance - alot - if the timing marks retard instead of advance you may have a problem with the EEC-IV or the ign module itself. Either the EEC-Iv is sending the wrong signal or the module is reading the signal wrong. This is assuming that everthing else is correct like the distributor and base timing.
I ran into this once about 20 years ago except that it was on a Chevy Monte Carlo V8 with HEI igntion, in this case it was the module that was bad.
FWIW, I just read my post and it didn't make sense or it didn't make much sense unless a person read the other thread cfhurdle made.
What I thought was odd, he said the timing is advancing 10 when the spout connector is attached, yet on the other thread he mentioned when he connected the spout connector, the rpms dropped, they should increase, obviously.
