RTV ?

So let's say you put a nice bead around the diff cover and you install bolts finger tight. You forget to torque them down after an hour. Its been 12 hrs since you put cover on finger tight. Do you now torque them down wait the remaining 12 hrs to cure and fill her up with gear oil? Or do you go back to the local parts store with tail between your legs and purchase more RTV and start over? The later would be cheaper especially with the price of gear oil. What would you do?

What RTV did you use? On a differential you want a firm set grey RTV. If you are not using Motorcraft, Whacker or Vibratite 999 then Permatex Grey Gear oil RTV is the next best ticket. Install to full torque and fill in 1 hour. https://www.permatex.com/products/ga.../?locale=en_us

so I just torqued down the bolts still had a little squeeze out so wasn't set up all the way. This is what I used.

RTV is used in manufacturing because it can be automated, eliminating a job a human could do.
There is NO reason to use RTV for maintenance when a LubeLocker gasket is so easy and works.
In your case, go on and tighten it down. It will probably be OK.

tried the gasket. Not a good outcome. This truck has been sitting for almost 2 yrs. There was a lot of pitting on the differential housing gasket surface.
