On my 91 f-250 auto 4 x 4 351 i have a very stiff shifter. (im keeping it clean). I was told by a friend that fords are know for having rusted shifter cables and they use part of the cable as a ground and that could be the problem? Any ideas and if so how do i fix this problem. I need to fix it before the snow starts flying since this is a plow truck and i need to be able to go between reverse and drive quick
I don't know where yer friend got the info on using the shifter cable as a ground but he's wrong. Theoretically it could be used BUT WHY!??!!? There are enough grounds on the engine to chassis as it is. According to the electrical diagrams I've seen for 87 to 96 F-Series, The shifter cable is NEVER mentioned as a ground.
As for the shifter cable, disconnect it at the lever on the tranny. If it's still stiff, get a new one. if it's not then you have a problem in the transmission lever thru bushing or internal valving. You'll probably need to take it to a tranny shop to get that fixed.
Well, in all actuality it don't even have a shifter cable. It is all linkages. Get under there with some pentetrating spray and start spraying the linkage. Then work it back and forth.
