Temp sender switch

I installed a Ford temp sender in the Chevy SB. The gauge is not working correctly. When I turned the ignition switch on, the gauge did not drop to C. Then it slowly started dropping. When all the way down to C then came up a little then started dropping to C. I shut the engine off and it headed back up to H. It is a stock 53 f100 gauge.

We need details:
  • What exact Ford sender you are using
  • 6V or 12V & positive or negative ground (I think you are 12V neg ground)
  • Any voltage reducers? Again, exact part numbers and manufacturer are helpful
  • A wiring diagram of what you have done

Good Illustration

Good Illustration B4. I did same with 49 F1 with 302. Had to get a flat head temp sensor that would work with stock gauge from suppliers. Before I installed it I put grouded sensor in metal can and heated water with small torch and watched temp gauge to know actual temp at 1/2 & 3/4 gauge. R ead temp with infered temp gun at sensor . Lucked out when installed in intake as thread and depth worked. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

The temp sender is from Oreillys listed for 64 f100. Do I need one that is specifically for 53 f100? Can someone tell me hat size the threads are on an original temp sender?

The 64 sender is incompatible with your stock gauge. You need a single pole sender for a 32-55 Ford like this one from Mac's:

I believe these senders are 3/8 NTP thread.

what about one from LMC? I am running Chevy SB with stock 6v gauges with voltage reducer. So will 56 12v temp switch work? The switch goes into the intake manifold and the threads are 1/2 NPT threads so I am using a reducing coupling.

No, you do not want the 56 12V sender. Stop making things hard by mismatching everything. Get the correct sender for your gauge as listed above (from your vendor of choice, MACs, Midfifty, Dennis Carpenter etc..). Since the correct sender is 3/8 NTP and you indicate your engine has a 1/2 NTP hole, you go to any parts store and get a brass adapter like this:

And just like you learned with your oil pressure sender, do not use any sealant that will block conductivity.

does Teflon tape prevent conductivity? Would the threads cut thru and make ground? I admit I am ignorant on this

No, do not use Teflon tape. Generally, no sealant is needed as the pipe threads are tapered and self sealing.
