6.0 Purchase?

I am looking for a truck to pull my new 26' travel trailer, about 9000 pounds fully loaded. I intend a cross country trip in the summer, and many trips thereafter around the west.

Will the 6.0L PSD measure up? What rear end gears are available, and recommended?

Any mileage estimates with and without the trailer?

Thanks

9000 pounds in a 26' TT? You must put an awful lot of stuff inside that thing. I am not even aware of a 26 footer that has a cargo carrying capacity that will allow it to get that heavy. I have a 31' TT that weighs a little less than 7000 pounds and nowhere near 9000 when fully loaded with LP gas, clothes, food, etc...

Anyway, here is a link to Ford for the towing specs. Should answer all your questions

http://www.fordvehicles.com/Trucks/s...es/spectowing/

The trucks (F250 and up) are rated at a minimum 12,500 for towing and have either 3.73 or 4.10 gears. I have 3.73 gears in my Excursion and towed my travel trailer 3600 miles (which is easily cross country miles)this summer to Alaska. No problems. I won't say that I could not tell it was there, but the truck pulled it effortlessly. My mileage varied as I was pulling through the mountains and flat terrain. My best was about 12.5 to the gallon. I just got the newest reflash (computer upgrade) and have not towed with it yet. So, numbers could improve.

It is a fantastic motor and tranny (5 speed auto, which I have). They work very well together. I do not think you will be disappointed. I haven't been. Hope this helps.

There is another post similar to this about 4 posts down. Check it out, too.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes 9000 pounds is on the heavy side. It does have an 8' slider. Unloded weight of the trailer is about 6300. That is before propane and water, and outfitting (solar, TV, tools, and the usual accessories. We won't be hauling water often, but when we go for extended dry camping, it holds 65 gallons, sometimes a ways from a fresh water source. Then there is the firewood and other stuff in the truck.

I went to the dealer to check them out a couple hours ago. Not real anxious to deal. Kinda pricey.
