We left going to MB on Saturday. About a 430 miles trip. My 6.4 4x4 dually pulling 16k 5er, my buddy in his '06 6.0 4x4 Harley F250 pulling 13k 5er and my other buddy in his new 6.7 4x4 SRW pulling a 9k travel trailer. I knew this was going to be interesting. As we all could've guessed, I had the "thirstiest" truck on the way here, as my son described it. But we all did fine. I had 5 regents enroute with 2 back to back 26 mile regens which I thought was odd! There's the fuel difference! Anyway, the 6.4 got a half a mpg more with it on cruise control, and it shifted quicker that way on long hilly pulls than I could make it do it. The truck performed very well. I got an average of 8.2 coming here. The 6.0 got 11.3 and the 6.7 got just over 13. Yes they are pulling less weight and we all have different driving habits, but I am happy. The 6.0 is tuned, deleted egr, headstuds, performance exhaust etc and the 2 newer ones are stock except for my new intake pipe. One thing I thought was very odd though, while driving with the cruise on, twice we hit a bad section of roadway that really jarred the truck, and the cruise control turned itself off somehow. Very odd. Made sure I didn't hit the steering wheel controls the second time, not sure about the first time, but twice. Anybody heard of this? Anyway, will report on the trip home when I get there.
If your trucks have traction control it will turn the cruise off with a big jarring like that with a load on, because it sees wheel speed changes quickly and not equally...if that makes sense.
Glad you had a great trip, I just hauled my 13k 5er about 1000 miles round trip and saw an average of about 13 mpg.
On the way home, I had only 3 regens(only had 4 going over there instead of 5...I can't count), all lasting about 12 miles. We ended up traveling 797.4 miles with a total of 7 regens and averaging 8.45 mpg for the trip. Coming out of MB, we came a different way and actually got 11 mpg for the first 5/8 of a tank coming the slower back roads. All in all, a great trip! I could not have asked for the truck perform any better. I got a little better fuel mileage coming home, I guess the anticipation of getting there got the best of my right foot at times! I kept the truck at its favorite cruising speed with the camper at 64-67 mph. It just wants to run there and runs very well with hardly no downshifting. The truck and trailer combo weighs in at 25,570 pounds. So, not bad fuel mileage at all for a rig weighing that much I don't think. Just itching to go again!
