I took my 2001 Ford F-250 to a transmission shop to have the clutch replaced. 7.3 with six Speed manual. 225k miles. They said when they took it apart, the pilot bearing was in pieces. I needed a new master and slave cylinder as well. They installed a pre filled master/slave. Installed a new clutch. Machined the flywheel. I went and picked it up. After it got hot, it started grinding very randomly. It’s the most random thing. I press the clutch in, shift into a gear, let the clutch out, and you can hear a short lived, quick grind as if you shifted wrong. The clutch pedal feels fine. Shifts into gear perfectly smooth. You never know what gear it’s going to happen in and you never know when it’ll do it. Sometimes when you put it in neutral, you can hear a grind, thud, or clink. The boot on the shifter is ripped, so it’s all very loud. I took it back to the shop, and they had to drive it a few times to even recreate the sound. When they heard it, they said it’s internal of the transmission. I’m not buying it. They didn’t even inspect the clutch again. There were none of these noises before they replaced the clutch. None. Never any of these issues. They said it would be $3k to rebuild the tranny and $5200 to put a rebuilt one in it. I really think they did something wrong when they replaced the clutch. Has anyone ever had this happen?? I want a second opinion from another set of eyes. I’m picking the truck up today. But I would like an idea of what this could be.
