2001 7.3 bad IDM?
So the X died on me while driving to my buddies place the other day. Got it to his house and the positive cable to the starter broke off. Fixed that, and now have crank/no start. Codes say that PCM does not receive any signal from IDM, buzz test fails on all injectors.
The only thing is, the IDM was replaced 3 months and 3k miles ago with a motorcraft IDM, because the prior IDM had died (water intrusion).
I'm thinking the IDM is bad, for some reason, maybe the loose starter wire ****ed something up. Both IDM fuses are good, and I replaced the CPS in case that was an issue.
For what it's worth, the truck and engine have <70k miles on them, so it's still fairly "new"
If it is the IDM and I have to buy a new one, which one's are recommended? I see Swamp's Diesel has a high voltage/high frequency one, as well as Diesel Tech of Chatanooga, and Sinister Diesel. Are there any that are recommended over other's? I am not opposed to putting a stock one in, but while I'm doing this I figure I might as well put one in that will make the truck run better.
Thanks.
You may want to bring this over to the 7.3 Forum.
Could be the IDM, but I would think having replaced it fairly recently would make that less likely. I would check your CPS if you haven't changed it. Easy swap, cheap and will shut you down while driving and cause a crank no start. Use Motorcraft. I don't think this would cause your failed buzz test though.
If you are having wires break off in other places, then I would look at your wiring harness from the IDM, through the 42 Pin, through the UVCH connection. You could potentially have worn wires or a short somewhere, I do believe this could also fry your IDM so you could have both if you do find shorts and still wont start. OHM the injectors from the external side of the valve cover gasket, ohm from the 42 pin and from the connector to the IDM. Here is a good test for any shorts. If your failing the buzz test on all injectors, then my thought would be an issue (short, broken/chafed wires) between your 42 pin connector and your IDM.
