203 degree stat

I am getting ready for a cooling system flush. I figured I would put in a 203 degree stat and Diesel Sites billet t stat housing and "dual alternator" upper hose.

https://www.dieselsite.com/dieselsit...ethousing.aspx

However, when looking at my setup, it looks nothing like their pictures for the 1994.5-1997.

As you can see, there wouldn't be a way for either their "billet housing" or hose to work. My upper hose is already "outside" the serpentine belt.

All the images I look at on the internet look like mine, and the "dual alternator" hose is unnecessary. What am I missing? The IDI had a different setup for the upper hose.

Nevermind...figured it out.

DieselSites site is confusing. If you want to use their stock looking hose, you need their billet housing as the hose is longer than stock. You can also buy a stock 1994.5-1997 housing from them.

So...now the question is who has done the 203 stat and did you like the results?

I did it and seems fine. No issues BUT I do not pull big loads. I use mine mainly for construction supplies and debris. Last time I had a trailer on it, the thing was 7500-8k only.

Unloaded oil temps in Texas summer sit around 220F freeway at 70mph.

There was/is a discussion going on in the SD subforum on the effects of a 203° thermostat in the 7.3L engine. There is some really good and factual information in there sprinkled with a few BS comments.

Link: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-opinions.html

I run the 203° thermostat and recently achieved 12.3 MPG towing a 5th wheel RV 5,500 miles from GA to IL to ID to MN to GA.

I never see more than 225° and tow heavy 90% of the time. I only know the 203° thermostat though as I installed it soon after buying the truck 8 years ago.

That's a firm nope here. My eot was too high with a factory stat. I went with a TE 180 to get coolant temp and eot down towing. When eot gets warm my big hybrids are slobbery as heck at idle.
With that said I am not on stock injectors, turbo fuel, oil.

I could actually drive my coolant temp up over the course of 40-50 miles . I am hoping the changes I made and plan still will fix that.

I'd like to get my temps down as well. What's the TE 180?

Terminator 180. Its been awhile and I couldn't tell you where to get one nowadays.

Doing good lately Aaron! The ox is running good, maybe I shouldn't say that, lol. I couple days ago my slide wouldn't go out which is better then not going in when you want to leave a campsite. About six years ago a guy was selling his 5er just like mine and I bought some parts off of him. Thank goodness because I had the part I needed. Busted three gear teeth off of the gear pack, don't know what caused it? Take care!

Thank you Glenn. So far a short search not luck on finding one. I would really like to cool it down some. Gets warm towing heavy with the hybrids. Safe travels and have a great time.

Rock Auto has the motorcraft 190 stat for $30. Along with a couple other brands. I can’t find a 180 either

Your quite welcome. It really comes down to personal preference and what your engine likes to run at.

At least now you are capable of making an informed decision based on facts and your goals for your application.

They just get old over time Glenn and break off with wear and age. We replace them regularly. You can check slide-out alignment as it starts to seat on the trailer when you are retracting it. It should be a smidge off but seat evenly as the last pull happens.

What do you think is 'regularly'? Etrailer sells just the gear and I ordered one so I have a spare. Its not the rollers that wear out unless they are plastic. This winter I think I'll replace them all.
