VR166T Voltage Regulator convert

hello wondering if anyone knows off hand how to hook the vr166 voltage regulator to a start/gen . no it is not a alt its a starter gen... say from the 40s to 60sish...
sort of tired of the relays not working all the time.. i seen a post but its from 2016 and it gives idea but iam not 100 sure on it..

i have 2 post on the start.gen... post 1 is field iam guessing that goes to F term on the 166 then the 2nd post is A . that goes to voltage regulator and the starter sillynoid.. maybe the A post on my S/G goes to stator on the 166 ?? then A on the 166 goes to battery ? and G to ground ?

i was looking at also the vr 715 if anyone has info on it..

info below is from a old post by franklin2 on here. ...

I=ignition-this gets a 12v signal from a ungrounded light bulb in the dash. The other side of the ungrounded light bulb goes to the keyswitch. This sends voltage to the regulator to bring the charging system "online" and ready to charge. When the alternator starts turning and has output, the regulator puts 12v on this I terminal. 12v on both sides of the ungrounded bulb in the dash makes the light go out.

A=feedback voltage terminal for the regulator. This is what the regulator uses to determine how much the output the alternator should have. This usually runs a short distance to a wire that has the battery voltage on it.

S=stator connection to the alternator. This terminal is also used sometimes as a "online" trigger instead of the "I" terminal. This is for trucks that do not have a "gen" light in the dash, and you will find the "I" terminal is left blank in those setups.

F=field terminal, simply a wire going from the F terminal to the field terminal of the alternator. The regulator varies the voltage on this wire, and that varies the output of the alternator.

Big difference is you are using the generator as a starter motor also. The starter solenoid is hooked to the generator. I don't have any idea how you would hook a car type regulator to that type of system. You have to be careful too, the alternators have power on the F terminal, their fields receive 12v or some positive voltage on the field to charge. A lot of the generators had the field tied to the battery internally, and the old style regulators made for generators grounded the field for it to charge. They used resistors to vary the amount of ground, so vary the amount of charge.

we use the old style 3 terminal and 4 terminal VRs from AC Delco.. same ones used on old cars. the 4 term one doesnt get hooked up as its a load. load as in lights or radio so on .

is there a schematic someone has with a 166 or 715 hooked to a old 50s to 60s setup ? maybe i can work off it and see if i can toss a resistor inline somewhere. i have enough of them from the radio tube days layin around.

i dont know i just hate to give up so easy lol.. what sucks is i can build a VR for radios in few mins. but thats easy enough with ac in 4 diodes and a LMx transistor. or even dc to dc vr .few other parts.

Here's a schematic for a old Gm generator setup on a 57 chevy. http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/t...57_3WD-056.jpg

Here's that site if you want to look around some more. Site Index - The Old Car Manual Project The wiring diagrams are at the bottom middle of the page.

tjanks for info.. yeah only diff i see is the fact of seprate starter... o will... that 12volt hit for the few secs on the sg to start. maybe a diff ing switch that discontects the vr for that start time .. no clue o will..
thanks for the help dave...
