Apparently perdels are not able to be checked on an early 99. Either that or I don't know what the heck I'm doing. I followed the instructions in the 7.3 tech folder but no perdels showed up as available to select even after installing the newest version of forscan. Regardless, is it possible that running out of fuel could cause the symptoms I've been experiencing? Today I experienced a no start condition for the first time. Because of that I checked my fuel pressure gauge and i discovered that I only have 3 PSI fuel pressure. I looked into that a bit and the pump does run but the filter is empty and my gauge shows over a 1/4 tank. Remember that I have a dual sump in the bottom of the tank so a pickup tube is definitely not an issue. Is there a PID to look at fuel quantity?
No PID for fuel, which is why many of us have a dedicated gauge for it.
In Forscan it's not a test, instead you monitor the PID for each cylinder. I forget the actual name of the PID sorry to say, but scroll down the list until you see a name that fits that is numbered 1-8. Or one of our diesel-blooded bretheren will recall the name of the PID.
It's not misfire, I can remember that much.
On edit: most obvious sign of lack of fuel pressure is zippo power and white exhaust smoke. And 3 psi on the gauge. Does the 3 psi go away when you turn off the pump?
There is a step by step thread from 7.3 short bus that shows how to get to the perdels and select the for monitoring in forscan. I did exactly that and perdels are not available for selection, like I said, unless I just don't know what I'm doing. Admittedly I barely muddle through these whiz bang machines that you young folks call computers.
The 3 PSI fuel pressure, along with all other indications do actually go away when I turn the key off. But the 3 psi appears to stay when the pump shuts off after its initial 20 second run, at least for a few seconds until I turn the key off.
Thanks David, so are you saying the PIDs won't even show up in forscan until the EOT is over 140°? I'm having a hard time getting there. Yesterday I dropped the tank and made sure the sending unit would still show me when I'm empty due to the 3 PSI and no fuel in the filter. After I got the tank back in place. I put 5 gallons in and started the truck. It ran good for a few seconds, maybe 20 seconds or so, then my ICP jumped to over 3700 PSI and I didn't even have my foot near the pedal. Today when I get home I'm going to disconnect the PHP Hydra and at least eliminate the chip. I'm somewhat concerned about that though, since my injectors are 238/100 single shot injectors. Should those injectors act normally when just the PCM and IDM are controlling them? Everything I've seen about single shot injectors says custom tuning is necessary.
Last night I experienced the same symptoms as I did the night before. The difference is that last night I monitored fuel pressure and also ran tests with the Hydra disconnected from the PCM. I think it's safe to say I have eliminated the Hydra as a suspect since the truck ran just the same as it did with the chip installed. I though I was getting somewhere with monitoring the fuel pressure because when I turned the key on the pressure went up to 55 PSI as expected but after the initial 20 second pump run time the pressure dropped to near 0. So that led me to think I might have a fuel pressure issue. But after starting the truck I continued to monitor fuel pressure and while running it held pretty steady at 54 PSI at idle.
The fuel pressure dropping is normal after the pump shuts off. My pressure goes from ~62 PSI to ~30 PSI instantly and then bleeds down from there if I sit and watch it. Like you noted though, if I start the truck (even from a low fuel pressure reading condition), the fuel pressure jumps right back up to ~62 PSI.
Ford says a minimum of 32 PSI fuel pressure with an engine under load.
well I got a bluetooth ELM adapter and checked out FSL. As it turns out, PERDELS are not available for me on FSL either. I have attached a couple log graphs that I hope someone can look at and be able to tell me what the heck is going on and what my next approach should be. Like I said in the beginning, I'm at my wits end.
Very curious. Your ICP starts normal at 0psi, IPR% at 14.84, then after startup, ICP rockets to over 3800psi. PCM kicks out P1282 excessive ICP, and commands IPR% low at 4.69, and FUEWPW 0.75ms. Not sure what is normal PW for 238/100s at idle though. Certainly the ICP is not right.
About 10 seconds after start, ICP defaults to 725psi which says the PCM is ignoring the ICP sensor.
Was the engine idling for this log?
Can you unplug the ICP sensor and take another idle log for 30 seconds, to compare with these? Let's see how it runs with the ICP ignored by the PCM the whole time.
Hi Jeff and thanks for taking a look at this. Yes I will definitely take another 30 second scan this evening. Yes the truck was at idlefor this scan. I may have even started the truck while the scan was running which I think would explain the 0 ICP at the start of the scan. As for what is normal for 238/100 injectors, the scans I posted were only on the PCM. The Hydra was disconnected. Should I connect the hydra for the next scan?
After taking a log with the ICP disconnected, agree it might be good to get logs with the Hydra connected, both with and without the ICP sensor plugged in.
Can you add all of the PIDs listed in the chart above for the next logs? That additional data could be helpful.
Will do. I attempted to get logs this evening but apparently I should have connected a battery charger last night. I apologize for not being prepared. It is connected now and tomorrow I will get those logs as soon as I can. The Hydra is already reconnected and I have verified the lines between the IPR and the PCM are neither shorted to ground nor open. In the interest of full transparency, I'm in the process of building my wife's dream home and I'm 2 weeks into a 90 day construction loan extension. My interior doors have been ready to be picked up for a couple weeks and I just can't delay that any longer. So I have rented a U Haul for tomorrow so I can pick up those doors and bring them to where they need to be. My point is, I probably won't have those logs before late afternoon. Thank you very much for all of the assistance. It is greatly appreciated now and will be even more appreciated once I can feel the experience of the full capability of this truck. I have invested roughly 12K in upgrades over the last several months rather than buying a new truck and I have yet to get the experience I was looking for when I spent that money. I'm feeling like a kid in a candy store that can't reach the KitKat.
