226 Engine

My F1 226 flat 6 has a 3 blade fan. Never questioned it until I picked up a 226 ,that I plan to rebuild, that has a 4 blade fan?
What do you other 226'rs have?

I believe the 3 blade fan is for cars. My old Ford parts catalog shows the 226 standard fan to be 4 blades, 17" diameter. The 254 big 6 had a 4 blade 18" diameter fan that's also called out for 226 with extra cooling. The extra cooling fan for 254 is a 5 blade 18" diameter. There is no mention of a 3 blade fan in the truck parts catalog. Bottom line is, if it works and keeps your truck cool, don't sweat it.

More to the story

So I thought I would swap out the fan if for no reason other than to be more time correct.
As you can see from the pictures there’s way more to it than just swapping out the fan.! Guess I’m going to put the three blade back on!

Looks like a different pulley is needed for it

I have a spare 4-blade pulley if you want it.

I think the problem is that the four bolts that hold on the fan hub assembly have different threads. That would make the job quite a lot bigger. Since this is the way it’s been, with a three blade fan, since I found a truck in 1976 I guess I’ll just leave it that way.

My truck has a Car engine, and a 3-blade fan. Never any problems with overheating even in slow traffic in 90°+ traffic. It's also very quiet. Not a very close fit to the shroud, tho.
