Some of you may have seen my previous post about my speedo being toast. While I am awaiting a replacement, I took the original out to try and figure out what preparation I should do with the replacement before slapping it in; I really do not want to go through it even again after it goes in, hah!
From the looks of it, there's not much to lube... the speedo cable spins a center mass (I guess that's the magnet) that then moves the needle to the proper position. I can't really see any visible bearing or gears so I assume it's just a direct connection type of a thing. The odometer has a few plastic gears and I can only see one spot with what could potentially be grease/lube? In any case - please see pix. I guess the three questions I have are:
* What lubricant to use? Lithium grease? Or maybe gun slider grease?
* Should I put anything into the cable socket on the speedo?
* Anything to lube for odometer gearing or the speedo needle?
I use a light synthetic oil to lube speedos. I apply it with the end of a toothpick.
Set the speedo head face down, put a drop on the part where the speedo cable plugs in. Let it sit for a little while to let the oil run down into the bushing. Spin it some to help the oil work in.There is a bushing where the speedo needle shaft goes thru the body, it gets a tiny drop. Tiny drops on all the spots where a shaft for the odometer comes thru the body or a bushing. Wipe off the excess when you are done. I spin the speedo wit the end of a cable & a drill for a while after lubing to make sure there are no problems before I install them in restored clusters.
I cleaned everything with compressed air and used a dab of silicone lube that advertised as leaving a dry film. It's still spinning great after several months. I think I used WD 40 brand specialist silicone.
