83 f150 c6. When the truck is first started, it pulls and drives just fine. When it warms up though, the trans makes a loud rattle and doesn’t pull at all. And , when shifting from either reverse or drive, the trans makes a grinding noise but stops when it fully goes in park. What’s the cause for this
not sure how many miles but it’s got brand new atf and a new filter.
So the truck is new to you?
Has it been sitting for a while?
Did it do this before the ATF / filter change?
Maybe someone that knows a little more of the C6 will pop in and have more to say.

it is a little new, I’ve had it since October of last year. Bought it with a bad trans, got a new one for a risky $200. Dude I bought it off of said it pulled good. Most likely part of my own gambling to get something that cheap. Had it running the other day. It ran through all the gears fine like a dream. Then it started grinding when putting in park. Only seems to do it when it’s warmed up, when started off the bat and drove, it makes absolutely no noise, shifts 1-2-3 perfect and has no slips. Upon the motor and trans warming up, it makes a loud rattle and stops pulling completely. Has brand new atf in it and a new filter as I said before. In my opinion I think I got sold a bad trans, not much I can do about that.
In most areas, you can get that trans rebuilt for less than $1000. Then you would have a tough trans that would last. They are not the best for fuel mileage, but they are hard to kill. Sounds like someone did kill this one though.
P.S. I learned this lesson the hard way, maybe it happened to you also. Way back in the day I was buying a used trans to swap in a old mustang I had. The used trans I bought was supposed to be good. I used my old torque convertor and I did not clean out the radiator cooler. Found out later this is where I went wrong. A trans going bad sends metal all through the oil, and the oil circulates through the radiator and the torque convertor. By using the old torque convertor and not cleaning out the radiator and the radiator cooler lines, I sent metal shavings and junk all through the good used transmission. Of course it would not work right. It would hesitate and had a rattle when I put it in reverse.
Learned my lesson and next time I bought a used trans, and new torque convertor, and cleaned out the radiator. That trans is still in there working fine, about 20 years later.

Reading between the line, the fresh fluid and filter were part of installing this mystery transmission? Before condemning this transmission, I'd suggest dropping the pan for an inspection. Drain the fluid into a clean pan and look for debris.
Make sure the filter is still clean and properly seated. I wonder if you've got a small air leak where the filter attaches, and it gets worse as the fluid warms up and gets thinner.
What brand filter did you use? A recognizable name brand? A discount Chinese brand like Fling Dung or Wok Hoam? A no-name kit from eBay?
What about the fluid? Are you positive it is the correct type? Or did you just ask the kid behind counter what was needed? When the transmission is older than the clerk, it's not impossible the kid sold you the wrong stuff.
