Charge light
On my 2005 E450 with the V10, will the charge light on the dash light up if the van sees too much voltage at the chassis battery? And if so, what is the threshold that turns it on.
This E450 is a motorhome with solar panels on the roof and a battery control center that will allow current from the solar controller to charge both the house batteries and the chassis battery. When the MH is traveling and the solar panels are on, the charging light on the dash will light and the voltage at the starter battery can be as high as 14.6v.
TIA,
Milton
You'll need to contact whoever added the solar panels and charging system. These systems tend to be slightly complex where the interconnecting devices or controls can be at issue. They've maybe failed or been improperly installed from the beginning.
I'd be highly concerned the starter battery is being over-charged albeit slowly which isn't good for its life.
My own '05 alternator's diodes had been failing for almost 3 years even though it was charging perfectly. My only symptom was something that resembled a huge parasitic drain that would leave the relative new battery flat after just 2 or 3 days not being driven. Replaced it with a professionally re-built unit and all is well now.
