to save or kill smog pump

89 e350 5.8 cw.
Issues- carbon monoxide in cabin
roar when cruising at 70mph
hot.. hood 135degrees , doghouse is 107degrees, top of engine 155degrees. 35 degrees hotter than my similar 89 4.9 after the same distance/speed.

Smog pump works but is just dumping into engine bay. Air intake is MISSING. ONe one ebay. $300!. Anybody have a part number so I can try to find aftermarket?
Mechanic is willing to either fix or rip out, but he states engine will run better with smog pump installed correctly versus delete.

Opinions? TO fix or delete and how many if any of my problems could be blamed on current state of smog pump.
Tx

The air injection system should make no difference on engine operation one way or the other, it's sole purpose is to provide fresh air to the factory cats at cold start to help burn off excess HC. Once the cats are up to temp the system is supposed to dump air back to atmosphere, there is an upstream and a downstream control valve that determine where air is injected.. at the motor, directly at the cats, or bypassing the system entirely.

What parts of your system are missing and are the factory cats still present?

The cats are gone. Previous owner did not remove smog pump, had just taped it off. Now it is not taped off and dumps hot air everywhere.

I say get rid of it then and install a shorter belt, and make sure there are no leaks in the exhaust system upstream of the O2 sensor where any of the air lines connected.

I would add,, save the parts you remove because if for some reason you ever needed to connect the system back you would at least have some of the parts.

The right shorten belt, without the air pump but with the AC compressor, can be :
GATES, MICRO-V, K060919 (13/16" x 92-3/8" OC)
Work perfect on my 89 E250 351W

hi ketch, so I need a shorter belt, but don't I also need some sort of new bracket, ac delete or something AND a new pulley, or is it if i want to use the stock belt then I need the ac delete pully?

The part number for the shorter Gates belt I gave you above is for if you removed the Air smog pump only and kept the A / C compressor.

If you want to keep the original belt, you need to install a pulley and its plate instead of the air smog pump. You will find this accessory at different specialist dealer for Ford Mustang parts.

If you have removed the air conditioning compressor and the air smog pump, then you need an even shorter belt. I can't help you for this one.

GOt the belt you recommended. Tx. ON a related note..my daughters and wife got on my butt for having such a "stinky van" so I went and got a new cat installed. Is it dangerous to run cat WITHOUT smog. I think smog superheats the cat so more emissions are burned, but not having it shouldn't damage cat, right?

yes I read somewhere that removing air smog pump can shorten the lifespan of the cat.

It doesn't matter to me because my 1989 Club Wagon is registered as a collector's vehicle. Therefore not subject to smog control.
