Oil Consumption Problem?

Hi All,

I have owned my 2015 F150 CCSB Lariat 4x4 for a couple years. I bought used via online auction and did a number of maintenance items quickly after buying it and have just enjoyed having a modern truck (20 years newer than my last truck). I drive less than average since I work from home so in the few years I have owned it, I have only done a few oil changes (4-5, changing every 5,000 miles).

I am running full synthetic and have the 3.5 TT ecoboost.

I am surprised every time I change my oil that I get what seems like substantially less oil out than I am putting in. I am finally posting on this issue because my last change just a few days ago, I only had 3-4 quarts that drained out even though the engine holds 6 quarts.

I know there can be a small loss of oil due to blow by and the turbos but would not expect a 50% loss. The OTHER weird thing is that in the last 5,000 miles, I periodically checked my oil and the dipstick always showed the oil was right where it needed to be. I did not check this right before doing the oil change (in hindsight I totally should have) and will do this at the next oil change but does anyone have any ideas WHAT IS GOING ON?

I don't have a heavy exhaust like I am burning oil, have no issue with any leaks, engine runs well, no other other obvious signs of an issue - what should I be looking for?

TIA

The filter holds nearly a quart when used and the media is fully soaked. Also, about 1/2 a quart or so flows out when the filter is removed. Then there is what remains in the engine that will never fully drain out as it's coating the internal parts and such. What are you seeing when you pull the dipstick, do you check it at least every couple of weeks?

That having been said, I get about 5 quarts from the pan and the oil filter removal when I drain mine.

Thanks JKBrad. This gives me some relief as the past few oil changes were all around 4.5/5 quarts I was getting out. All the oil changes, even this one where I got ~3.5 quarts include the oil filter being poured out and the oil that drains from the block at the oil filter.

Regardless, this makes me feel a bit better.

I should also have mentioned that since my last oil change I did install a catch can with 3 ounce capacity. To my surprise though, it fills up every few hundred miles whereas I expected it to last about 5K and dump it between oil changes. Any thoughts on this from anyone who is running one?

Most of us don't use one. I can say this though, 59k miles on my 2015 3.5 EB and it uses zero oil between changes.

Same with my 2016. I change the oil about every 5,000 miles and the oil is always right at the top fill mark on the dipstick.

Similar. Have about 56K miles on our 2015, and the oil use is not measurable on the dipstick. We change the oil about every 6K miles.

Filter content and the spillage wiped up with those blue Scott Towell rags.

I can only wish that were true for my 5.0

I'm approaching 110,000 miles on my 2011 3.5L eco and no adverse or noticeable oil usage. I change every 5k miles with new filter and I ensure each time that the oil is sitting at the top of the hash marks on the dipstick and it shows the same reading when I'm about to dump it.

Thanks All. This is making me wonder if the catch can with the oily/gas mixture it's separating is somehow leading to me dumping oil that would otherwise recirculate? It's the only thing that (somewhat) makes sense for such a drastic change since my last oil change. I will remove the catch can to see if I get back to the 5qt mark on the next oil change. If I'm back around 5qts then that should confirm the catch can is where all my oil went...

My 2015 3.5 TT with 72k uses ZERO oil in between oil changes. I change oil every 5k miles, and use a Motorcraft filter
