Sorry to tell you but your colum is for sure a 3 speed. Someone cut off one of the shifter arms. This is a 53-54 3 speed column. Also note that it doesn’t have the slot fir the lock paw in the bell
This is the 53-55 auto. If you’ll look you see the slot. This lever has a paw on it to lock it in park. Your 3 speed column does not
@bigwin56f100 What do you make of the single shift lever in the top picture of post #11 ? It doesn't look anything like my 3 speed one that I compared to it earlier. I don't know which assembly plant the truck that my auto column came off of? Would the parts in the 2nd picture of post #12 fit my shift lever? Is it possible that I have an odd variation?
53-54 used cast levers for the 3 speed. Not sure what 55 used and 56 used steel levers
Yours they disassembled and put the long arm on the bottom and cut the arm off of the one with the grease fitting on it This is the lever they cut off of yours
I see what you are saying now. Thanks for your insight. At some point probably decades earlier someone modified this column to work with an Automatic. Seems as though they went to a little trouble to do it. Looking at up close and in person I couldn't see where anyone worked on it. I could have done that with my old 3 speed manual if that is what I wanted to do. So I wont be damaging a rare vintage piece if I go ahead and cut it down to a 30" to 33" to modify for my rack and pinion steering. I just bought a piece that I already have. I guess I'll put my old 3 speed manual one with its box with my 2nd cab and frame. I'll have several pieces if someone wants to build one. I'm only going to build one truck for myself. Thanks again @bigwin56f100 and you other guys too!
bigwin56f100 By the way, very nice truck. I saw the group of pictures in front of the garden! ADDED-While we're on the topic of 53-56 columns here is a real good "blow up" drawing of the column parts. it has many pieces listed. I hope that it helps someone in the future. @abe I haven't either. I originally searched for an auto column because I'm building a modified or semi-custom '54 that will have an AOD, 4R70W or an AOD with 4R70W gears in it. So in the process I have been learning about the stock ones. I bet @bigwin56f100 could tell us the first year of the automatic in an F100.
For what I'm doing I will add something non-stock to my column like this.
@bigwin56f100 After I got to my shop today I unpacked my column and out in the sun I took a real good look at it. Whoever modified it put a little thought in to what they were doing and cut off the shift arm and maybe put a little curve in it. Then when they reassembled it backwards placed the cut end next to the column tube.(Actually looks like the cut arm is fitting in the notch of the bracket). That held that in position so it wouldn't move and when I installed the lever I was unable to function it like the old "3 on a tree". I guess that they flipped the remaining lever so that the one in use pointed away from the firewall a little to avoid interference.
