AAW + Ignition/Distributor/alternator question.

Just bought the American Auto Wire Classic Update Harness for my 1977 F150 351m/400

Instructions say I need either a Ford Gen 3, GM “SI” or a 1 wire alternator to be compatible .

Any recommendations on which alternator to go with ?

I’m running a Mallory unilite distributor with a promaster coil and ballast resistor . I will be adding in a good sound system, I have an aftermarket horn, eventually will restore the ac/heater. Nothing fancy with the lights and I have an electric fuel pump. That’s pretty much it for my electrical needs.

thanks l

-Matt

I would go with a 3g alternator. The consideration becomes amp rating output of the alternator and if you go high enough then you may need a double groove pulley and where does that leave you with your future A/C plans and your current pulley configuration. A lot to consider but definitely a 100-130 amp 3g alternator.

I'm pretty sure you can use the stock alternator. That's what I did. I think there's just one brown wire that says Alt on it. It is 12v switched to the Regulator. The American Autowire kit was worth every penny btw. Its awesome.

Thank you for the responses . Now as far as the distributor and ignition system. The kit includes connections for a GM HEI style , and has some vague info about connecting a “points type” setup .

Im not I’m entirely sure what type of ignition/distributor type system mine would be considered currently. Again I have a Mallory unilite with a promaster classic coil, and a ballast resistor. I’m pretty sure it is toast right now because I was running it without the resistor, it died on me does not spark anymore. The shop doesn’t even know how to fix it and said I should just redo the harness and go from there.

Before I try to fix the current system and integrate into the new harness, what type of distributor and ignition system would you recommend as an upgrade? Especially if it is of the HEI style , which seems to be the most straight forward.

Thanks!

I also went with HEI. Works good. The harness already has a switched 12v and a tach wire for it.
