There are a few on here running a GM one wire type alternator. I think they are around 100 amps. Not sure which model to buy or what mods need done to make it hook up.
Ford made a larger alternator ..I had one in my old wrecker ..try looking in one of those ( I doubt you will find one in a junk yard cuz if it still works its prolly still being worked) .the thing to look for is a over sized housing ..you will also need the wiring harness..by the way that alternator is $190.00 at napa so keep that in mind too ..I got rid of the wrecker (its still being used though but it now has a 460 in it..) so that alternator went with the new 400 that was in the wrecker into my old mans truck ..at any rate you will need the wiring harness and the brackets too..this alternator is really awsome ..no problems with dim lights at night (even with the windshield wipers , the heater on high , with fog lights at idle mind you) I'll see if I can find a link to our local parts store so you can see it .......sorry no link but the alternator is a 100amp type it retails for about 260 bucks but you may be able to find it cheeper (I found it for 166.00) anyways go to autozone ,advanced auto , or napa and ask for a alternator for a '79 F350 with a 400 they should have a listing for a heavy duty alternator for that truck ..If I remember correctly two of the connections on that type of .alt. are spade types and the main connection that goes to the battery is bigger you MAY be able to make your existing harness work but I am not gonna say it will you may end up with and engine fire ..I do know that there is no difference betwwen the voltage regulators ..at any rate I how this helps and other questions on this I'll do my best to help .

Thank You that helps alot.I will be re-wiring the truck as I am in the re build stage and would like to incorporate the bigger alt now rather than later. Thanks again.DJ
I got a 100 amp crome one from www.jegs.com for about $100 and it's been working great. If you don't want crome, I think you can get an upgrade kit from jegs as well.
