I have an Android Pixel 5 and it works great for the most part. When I am not wired into the truck through the USB C connection, I can answer calls. When I am wired, it will answer the call but I can't hear the caller and they can't hear me. When I hang up and call them right back it works fine. So it works mostly but not perfectly.
I told the phone and truck to forget each other and re-paired and that worked for a very short while then it started doing that again.

Mine was like that for a while, could make called fine when connected by USB, but couldn't receive them. Must have been an OTA update, because it seems to be working fine now. Not sure what changed.
Are you talking couldn't get it working with BlueTooth or Car Play? Either way it should work on an 18. Has it ever worked with any other phones? Do you have another iPhone to try it out??
If you are talking CarPlay what happens on the phone when you pull it in? Have they gone into settings and turned on Apple Car Play on the Sync? What SW build do you have on the Sync?
Did you try another cable?
Was Blue Tooth turned on on the phone?
Lots more questions. A little more info can help.
But to answer your question Android or Apple should work fine on Sync.
I too have a Samsung phone that seems to work fine with my truck. I can answer and call with the truck. I really don’t see the need for my phone to connect to the truck. Yea I use it but I get by fine when I’m in my older truck that can’t connect to a phone.
I have an iphone 12 and bluetooth and carplay have worked fine except the day after I did the latest sync update. a few hours into a road trip, my phone would come up on carplay but I couldn't get the audio to work. tried a different cord using the usb-c instead of standard usb, no luck there. Reset the phone and then switched to bluetooth, phone and audio connected but again audio wouldn't play. Finally ended up doing a reset of the system while stuck in road construction traffic and haven't had an issue since.
I previously had an iPhone 6s plus that connected and worked flawlessly from the day I purchased the truck. Plugged in to the usb port, or using only bluetooth, it worked perfectly.
The iPhone 12 plus will not work with carplay, but it will connect and I can talk on the phone, listen to spotify or pandora. No maps, text, and whatever else comes through carplay.
When the truck is turned off after I've driven with the phone connected, it will not connect with the phone at next start up. The F350 bluetooth connection must be removed from the iPhone and the iPhone must be completely deleted from the truck. I can reinstall, and it works (without carplay as described above) for the next drive, until turned off.
I travel for business, and the iPhone 12 has connected to a half-dozen different 2020 and 2021 vehicles and operated perfectly.
I connected the wife's iPhone 11, works perfectly. Connected an Android, worked fine.
I've attempted an update Sync 3 while connected to home Wifi, no update.
I've done the master reset multiple times, but it will not remove the original iPhone 6s plus, and it will not allow my iPhone 12 to connect to carplay or stay connected. I've scoured the internet looking for iPhone settings and have put everything where it should be.
It's got to be something simple that I'm missing...

To narrow it down a bit more for, do you know of anyone else with an iPhone 12 and if so, ask them to try and connect in your truck.
If the problem doesn’t happen, then you’ve found the problem which would be your iPhone.
If the same problem occurs, then it’s something with SYNC 3 and maybe the APIM itself.
