I am having trouble with my 2000 F-150 after starting cold. It has the 4.6L, V8 and is 4X4. When I start it, it races to around 2200 RPM then idles down slowly to about 900 to 1000 RPM. It appears to run pretty smooth but when I put it in gear and start to drive it starts to act like it is flooded or something. I can press the pedal down far and it continues to seem to be going at idle speed. I press it up and down to the floor and finally it acts like it gets a burst or energy then has power to get up to speed. It only started this a couple of weeks ago. Also it has a rough idle sometimes and sometimes it purrs like a kitten. Warm idles around 700RPM. I have no DTC's flashing and have replaced the air, fuel filter. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Please Help. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply! I failed to mention that i read other forums and did spray brake cleaner on the MAF and also cleaned the IAC with the same cleaner. Any other idea's? Thanks.
The only other thing that I can think of is to have the dealer (I know, it ain't the cheapest thing) watch it on their scan tool. It will monitor everything that is going on and should be able to see what is really happening. The only other think to check first would be the fuel pressure, esspecially when it is acting up.

I will do some checks with the fuel pressures. It is funny although that it really only acts up like when cold. This morning was real bad for just a short bit. I will keep working with it for a while then if I need to take to dealer I will. Thanks for the info.

I have a 2000 F-150 w/ the 4.6L engine. I was wondering what I need to do to check the timing. I have never checked timing on these overhead cam engines. Did change the Spark Plugs although, what a task that is now. Thanks for the help.
I'd replace the IAC all together. Cleanning the IAC isn't too effective. 9 times out of 10 the IAC is responsible for cold idle problems. I got mine from Discount Auto Parts for about $60. Autozone also carries it for $70.
When mine went bad, if I let the idle get too low I had to be very gentle with the gas because it would just choke if I gave it too much while trying to prevent a stall. I thought maybe this was what he was talking about. Now, if it's at a steady idle and won't rev, then that's something else.
Check the TPS. Check the output voltage at idle. Should be .5 to 1 volt. At the same time move the throttle and check to see if the voltage increases smoothly. This little bugger can cause all kinds of problems if it is bad.
I am very new to these 4.6L engines. I would like to ask you a question on a problem I just started having on my 2000 F-150, 4x4. I purchased this truck a couple of months ago. It ran fine untill recently. When I start the truck cold and pull out onto the road their is no gas pedal response. I can press half or more on the pedal and the truck just will not go. It is like it is running at idle. I then have to press almost to the floor, pumping the pedal like a carburated engine trying to stall before it will go. It seems to chug a bit, like no gas to the injectors. Then after a couple of minutes it will pick up speed and run pretty good. It seems to be worse when it is cold. Once warm it is fine. I notice a rough idle sometimes and a slight up and down speed on the Tack. I cleaned the MAF with Brake Cleaner and it still does this when cold. I replaced the fuel filter also. Got any ideas on what I should check next. Also it started this weekend flashing code P1151. Thanks.
