Anyone ever experience problems wit an e4od such as
rough shifting and the engine dying when you shift into reverse? Mine is doing that and any help would be appreciated.
the dying in reverse is probally an engine driveabilty problem, the rough shifting is probally trans. e4od are trouble, especially the earlier years, they started them in '90.
What problems are these transmissions notorious for? I have an E4OD in my 1992 F150 2WD. It seems to be operating fine right now (149,000 miles). I recently bought the truck and I'd like to know what I'm in for!!
i've had poor shifting in my '90 for almost a year now, but it keeps going, 189,000 on it, also have a built 302 in front of it. had a friend that was toing a car trailer with his and could only get around 60k out of them, not good when they go for 1,200 to 2k for a new one.
Does anyone know if its possible to do a tranny
swap on these since it uses information from the
processor to control shift points? A transmission guy where I live said the biggest
problem with these is the main shaft and some
planetary gearsets. He said to replace them and
rebuild the tranny is about 2 grand. the E4OD
wasn't on of Fords better ideas. Next time I'll
buy a manual shift or a different brand.
I had the same exact problems with my 92 with 85K miles. The transmisson must have been worked to an over heated condition in the past. After I got it at 83 K miles I put a transission air cooler on it, but it was too late. The internal seals/ o rings etc were brittle and would not seal properly. Had the transmission rebuilt and upgraded by AAMCO this past March and it works flawless.
As far as swapping for something like a C6 or a stick, it is possible, albeit expensive. When I had my e4od replaced at about 140,000 miles, I asked about replacing it with a stick, but the shop said the computer would need replaced, as well as adding a clutch pedal and all related equipment. For switching to a different auto, you'll need a kickdown linkage and a few other things, as well as a new computer that doesn't need the input from the trans. The shop said it's possible, but it'll cost more than replacing the e4od, so I got another e4od and I baby the heck out of it (fluid change every 15-20,000 miles, fluid cooler, etc.) It's been in there for about 30,000 miles now, and I haven't had any problems with it whatsoever.

My f-150 is a 93. The e40d just spun its last rpm on the way home from a weekend road trip! I ordered a new tranny from GReenleaf.. $1k with a life time warrenty. the only prob I see is that it is a reman. from a 92. did the have as many probs in 92 as they did in 93? who has a 92 that has been good to them, did you do any mods to it?
go to baumann tranmissions he tells all of the shortfalls of the earily e40ds. All the problems can be upgraded to 1995 specs. i never knew it but this tranny was based heavily on the C-6. The lastest version is beefed up again and put behind the powerstokes at least in 99. i would print off Baumanns list of upgrades and take it to the rebuilder to make sure he puts in the improved parts .
I can tell you what was wrong with mine. Main shaft bearings fried, bands shot, overdrive sprag and drum broke. I gto off easy. A freinds friend rebuilt it for 975, with a i year warrenty.
