initial carb adjustment

I recently bought a 71 f250 4x4 w/360 2v 2100 carb. It was smoking pretty badley at start up and run. (spark plugs solid black) I adjusted the idle mixture from seated to 1 and 1/2 turns out and the smoking has pretty much stopped. I replaced the plugs as well. Is this too lean? I read here earlier intial adj should be 2 and 1/2 turns out.

Thanks

1 1/2 turns is the proper starting point.

Now run it for a while (a week) and pull the plugs to check the current status of what's going on inside..

get a tach or a vacum gauge with the engine at normal operating temp hook up the tach or vacum gauge now turn the idle screws until you either reach the highest rpm or the highest vacum the do a lean roll turn the mixture screw back 20 rpm or til the vacum gauge just starts to come down thats the proper setting for a mixture screwsit will start and run alot betterat low rpm
