Never used the paint. I use motorcycle chain lube that contains moly. It penetrates into the leaves as a liquid then sets up into a tacky film. When done, wipe the outside of the leaves down with a rag wetted with solvent to remove the excess. Been doing this for years, works great.
This is probably the best stuff ever for friction surfaces and rust protection. Used it in the military for decades on Howitzer cannon tubes. Insanely overpriced now because the government probably buys half of their stock. CRC has similar products for half the price. Having said all that use Rustoleum or an alkyd enamel used for farm implements. It takes a decade to 100% dry and works great. It protects against rust and IMO provides a good enough lubricated surface. I used an alkyd enamel on truck springs.
Great suggestions. I am shying away from the spacers as they would 1/2” ap the aping pack since I have 9 leaves. It just makes it a little more complicated to get the correct size U bolt.
I will check out those other lube options. They look promising.
